About Us
Back in 1948, Cliff Livingston, Sr only knew a few things about business when he decided to open up his own moving and storage company.
1) Treat a customers valuable possessions as his own;
2) Hire employees that he'd feel as comfortable with in his own home as he would in a customer's;
3) Do more for less; and
4) Mediocrity signaled failure.
Now, more than 55 years later, Cliff Livingston's sons and grandsons at Livingston Storage and Transfer are amazed at just how much he did know as those simple principles still guide Livingston's every move.
The Early Years
Following World War II, Ft.Benning grew rapidly. Cliff, Sr. recognized the need for an additional moving & storage company for relocating soldiers around the world and storing their household goods. He worked diligently with the Transportation Department and base commanders in order to satisfy their needs. During this time, Cliff employed his two sons, Cliff Jr. and Tommy. He taught them how to operate the business "from the ground up" but his most important lesson was to "Satisfy the customer!"
Over the years Columbus, Georgia began to grow as well, and civilian & corporate business needs expanded. However, Cliff Livingston saw the need for a higher level of cooperation between Ft Benning and the local community long before he established his own moving company. In 1946, Cliff and local business leaders, in conjunction with Ft Benning's Commanding General, Michael O'Daniel, established the very first Civilian/Military Affairs Organization in order to have a more structured way to help Columbus and the military form a stronger bond. Before long, this unique organization was being established in communities with military bases around the world. In the mid 1980's, the Civilan/Military Affairs Organization recognized Cliff Livingston's contribution to the success of its efforts by establishing The Cliff Livingston Award, an annual recognition of the person or people who have made the highest comittment to further improving the relationship between these two communities.
By 1948, Cliff was firmly positioned to be of assistance to both of the communities and their growing needs. Livingston Storage and Transfer soon began relocating families locally, state to state, and around the world. Additionally, the company was storing items such as furniture, office furnishings, and leasing space for commercial storage.
Presently, Cliff Livingston Jr. and Tommy Livingston are the owners/operators of the Company. Cliff Livingston III (Bud) , Jeff Livingston and Scott Livingston, third generation members of the Livingston family, are also currently operating the business. Their primary functions are sales and sales management in both the moving and business records divisions, but all wear many hats and are ready to answer any of your moving and storage questions.
